With the latest COVID trends limiting the size of usual weddings, this has left us with the option to elope or have smaller size weddings. Even though your original plans may have fallen through, a small elopement is the next best option, and less stressful!
Here is a guide to planning your San Diego elopement!
Elopement: “An elopement is an intimate ceremony—usually just the couple, officiant and/or a witness. While traditionally elopements are spontaneous, they are now becoming much more planned events, with couples traveling to breathtaking destinations to do them.”
Minimony: “A minitomy term has been applied to commitment ceremonies taking place during COVID for couples who have had to postpone their wedding. It’s a way to honor your original wedding date, and perhaps even get legally married, with the expectation of doing the full celebration at a postponed date.”
Microwedding: “Think of a microwedding as a cross between an elopement and a big traditional wedding. Microweddings are 50 people or less, but still have design details.” Basically, it’s like a pre-2020 wedding, but on a smaller scale.
Descriptions from Betches.
Step 1: Pick a date & location!
Best time to plan an elopement in San diego would be in the fall, where the weather is perfect, and the summer crowds are gone. Best time to shoot would be 1-2 hours before sunset, for best lighting.
Some of the best locations are by the beach, here’s a list of some of my favorite locations. If you’re up for a short trip, there are some cool lations about 2 hours away such as Joshua Tree.
- Coronado Beach
- Sunset Cliffs
- Scripps Pier
- Catalina Island

Step 2: Details + Vendors
Now that you have location, time to figure out details such as who will be officiating the ceremony.
- Fact- you can have a relative or friend officiate your wedding, and they can act as a legal ‘officiant’! The process is easy and can be done online, you can find more details here.
- Some couples opt for a ‘spiritual’ ceremony, meaning they exchange their own vows at a location, and do the legalities for another time.
- Write your own vows, and write them in cute his & her books
- Need a wedding dress in few weeks? Try BHLDN for fast shipping, or Asos, Lulu’s, Revolve for affordable dress options.
Make it extra special! Have your makeup/hair done + get flowers!
Some favorite local vendors are—
- Florals: Native Poppy + Goldie Blooms
- MUA/ Hair: Face by Raymie
Step 3: Plan an epic day!!
Make plans for the big day by planning personal ideas!
- Pick a song for a first dance! Have a portable speaker that I can bring!
- Bring your favorite drink of choice to celebrate after vows.
- Celebrate with cake or donuts.
- Reservations at a local restaurant for later, or find a spot that can accommodate your small group.
Honestly, do what makes you two happy, if tacos are your thing, go for it! 🙂
Hope you enjoyed reading through my recommendations. Do remember the day is all about you two, and celebrating your wedding day, don’t let family change your mind on your original plans.
