Catalina Island Travel Guide

Recently traveled to the magical Catalina Island, to shoot an elopement and spend a few days. This little island reminded me so much of the Meditteranean Coast, a hidden gem truly with Italian vibes, clean water and a perfect getaway. Here are some details about the island and what you must do!

The main town is called Avalon, where you would arrive. It harbors many boats and the views are stunning!

When to go—

Best time to go would be in the summer time during the week, to beat the tourists visiting the island. You get more of an island feel this way. The shoulder seasons [before/ after summer] are good as well, when things slow down.

Getting there—

The island is about a 1.5 hour ferry ride from Southern California, we took the Catalina Express ferry from Dana Point, but there are other port options such as Long Beach + Newport Beach.

Where to stay—

Hotel Atwater is located in town, walking distance to everything, which is very convenient. They also offer free bike rentals, which is a super fun way to explore the island.

Airbnb is a good option as well. There are some rentals in town, as well as Hamilton Cove, which is a Meditteranean style community located a bit away from the city of Avalon (where ferry docks are), however it is a beautiful location to stay. Most rentals include golf carts as well, to get you around.

What to do—

  • Biking around Avalon and discovering the island is a must!
  • Lovers Cove, a little beach that can be found north of the ferries is a hidden gem. The water is crystal clean, and perfect for snorkeling.
  • Spend a beach day at Descanso Beach Club, a beach club where you can lounge, swim, eat & drink. Can be walked or cycled from the main square.
  • Aerial Adventure Tour, ideal for those who want to try something new, and like to be active
  • There are several hikes in Catalina, which is also popular with backpacking, worth checking for explorer
  • Check out the close town of Two Harbors, known as Catalinas ‘other side’, located on the west side.
  • Explore the island by golf cart, or bike!

Where to eat—

  • A favorite romantic dinner spot is Bluewater Grill, it overlooks the pier and is perfect at sunset
  • Coney Island West, we ate here every day, a local burger spot, however we made it a ‘healthyish’ meal with veggie burgers with extra lto
  • Cafe Metropole, a local cafe, ideal for lunch
  • Descanso Beach Club, the ideal spot to hang out, swim, grab some snacks and a drink!

As you can see the island offers a lot to do, and it is the perfect getaway, without actually hopping on a plane. Hope this guide helps and makes you want to visit the island soon!
